OPDS Reader for iPhone & iPad
ComicVerse is a free OPDS client. Point it at a self-hosted comic server and you can browse, search, stream, or download your whole library without copying it to your device.
What OPDS Is
OPDS (Open Publication Distribution System) is the standard catalog protocol that self-hosted comic servers speak. A server publishes its library as an OPDS feed, and a client like ComicVerse reads that feed and shows you the catalog. Because it's a standard, one client works with every server that implements it.
Supported Servers
| Server | Setup guide | Streaming |
|---|---|---|
| Komga | Connect to Komga | Yes |
| Kavita | Connect to Kavita | Yes |
| Calibre-Web | Importing Comics | If the server advertises page streaming |
| Any other OPDS server | Importing Comics | If the server advertises page streaming |
ComicVerse reads both versions, OPDS 1.2 (Atom) and OPDS 2.0 (JSON). You don't need to know which one your server publishes. Type its address and ComicVerse finds the catalog, taking 2.0 when both are on offer.
What You Can Do
Browse the catalog by library, series, and collection, and search the server from inside the app. On any comic, stream it straight from the server or download it for offline reading. Progress tracks per comic either way, so you can pick up where you left off.
All of it is free. Reading has no subscription and no ads.
How Streaming Works
ComicVerse streams whenever the catalog says where the pages are. An OPDS 2.0 catalog lists them outright. An OPDS 1.2 catalog advertises the Page Streaming Extension. Either will do, so streaming isn't limited to the servers ComicVerse knows by name. Komga and Kavita both qualify.
Failing both, ComicVerse reads the archive in place over HTTP range requests, which works for CBZ files on servers that allow them. If nothing works, download the comic and read it offline. The app tells you which case you're in before you open anything.
