A Chunky Comic Reader Alternative
Chunky Comic Reader was a favorite on iPad for years. Its last App Store update was version 2.5.10 on 16 August 2020, and it still targets iOS 9. If you're looking for something current, here's what moving to ComicVerse gets you and what you'd give up.

The big one is OPDS. Chunky predates the self-hosted comic server era, so it pulls from cloud storage or an SMB/FTP share on your PC, Mac, or NAS. If you've since moved your collection onto Komga or Kavita, Chunky has no way to talk to it and ComicVerse does.
What You Give Up
Chunky did two things ComicVerse doesn't.
Its smart upscaling and auto contrast/tint cleaned up low-resolution and yellowed scans. ComicVerse renders pages as they are, with no equivalent correction. Chunky also had parental controls, letting you flag specific comics as allowed and passcode-lock the rest. ComicVerse has nothing like it.
If either is why you still open Chunky, it's still the better app for you, for as long as it keeps launching.
Moving Your Library Across
Your files are the same files, so nothing needs converting.
- Get your comics into the Files app, from iCloud Drive, a connected storage provider, or by copying from your computer
- In ComicVerse, open the Library tab, tap +, choose From Files, and multi-select everything you want
- If your collection lives on a NAS, consider running Komga or Kavita on it instead and connecting over OPDS, so you stream rather than copy
Reading progress doesn't transfer. Chunky stores it in its own sandbox with no export, so you'll start fresh on progress even though the comics come across intact.
What It Costs
Nothing to read. Importing, OPDS, streaming, downloading, and the reader are free, with no subscription and no ads. The optional AI creation studio is the only part that uses credits, and it's entirely separate from reading.
